Upward Flag Football is coming to Ellendale Baptist Church with practices beginning August 27, 2011. Upward Sports is the world's largest Christian sports league for children and provides the BEST sports experience for every child. Upward Sports teaches sport fundamentals in an environment of healthy competition, helping kids to develop skills for the sports arena and values for life. Ellendale Baptist Church offers flag football for boys ages 1st grade through 6th grade. With weekly practices and games limited to one-hour each, this league is family-friendly and fun for everyone!

Tigers Annual Alumni Soccer Weekend set

The University of Memphis men's soccer team are holding the annual Alumni Soccer Weekend Friday and Saturday, Aug. 12-13.

The weekend, which features the annual Tigers vs. Tigers alumni soccer match, will also include an alumni training session and an alumni & family luncheon.

Any former men's soccer alumni wishing to participate should contact the university at 901-678-5949.

The Tigers open their season at home against Lipscomb on August 28 at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.

Firecracker 5K  unites runners in Memphis, Afghanistan

Memphis and Kabul, Afghanistan are a world apart. But they'll be united in spirit this Independence Day weekend as American runners in both places will go through their paces for the benefit of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Two hundred U.S. soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines on duty in Kabul will run a "shadow race" in conjunction with the 2011 Firecracker 5k for St. Jude in East Memphis. The Memphis event kicks off at seven o'clock Sunday evening, July 3 with an expected crowd of more than 2,000.

Mini golf  tourney for police dog vests

A miniature golf tournament will be held at Putt Putt Golf and Games, 5484 Summer Ave, to benefit the Craig James K-9 Vest Fund.

The vests help protect police dogs of the Bartlett Police Department from shootings and stabbings.

The tournament will be held from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m., and registration is at the Bartlett Police Department.

      You prepare to fight heat exhaustion at the usually hot and humid Gibson 5K. But cold? No one expects to get a chill on what began as a sultry Southern June night on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi. More than a few in the record crowd of 1,688 on Saturday evning, June 11 would have given a pretty penny for a poncho, blanket or jacket after a surprise thunderstorm had runners splashing down Beale Street.

Public safety workers get cheap rounds at Edmund Orgill

This summer, the Edmund Orgill Golf Course in Millington will begin honoring firefighters, law enforcement officers and other Shelby County emergency service workers. The course will offer them a discount for playing 18 holes of golf.

“We wanted to show our appreciation for those who risk their lives to help the citizens of Shelby County.” said Lee Hinson, executive director of the Shelby County Conservation Board. “This is our way of thanking law enforcement and emergency services workers for their sacrifice and commitment to keep our community safe.”
