Rally promises to give students voice in charter fight

During the past several months, various political, community and educational entities have united community stakeholders during informational forums to discuss the possible outcomes of a merger between Memphis and Shelby County schools.

Stand for Children and the City of Memphis Youth Ambassadors Program believes that regardless of differences in opinions about schools’ consolidation, it is imperative for all stakeholders to initiate and maintain positive, ongoing discussions about the best interest of the students who are served by both public school systems.

Color TV: Careers in the Media

Rhodes College hosted a unique Black History Month program on campus Tuesday night in the Orgill Room of the Clough Building.

About 30 students showed up for "Color TV: Careers in Media," a panel discussion about diversity in media and the accomplishments of African Americans in the field. Panelists inlcuded: Action News 5 morning co-anchor Kym Clark, 95.7 Hallelujah FM radio personality/producer Michael Adrian Davis and the Executive Director of the Tri-State Defender Dr. Karanja Ajanaku.

Students, most of whom are interested in journalism or mass media careers, were also invited to ask questions of the panelists about their personal experiences in their chosen fields, as well as the future of the business.

Five members of Briarcrest Christian School’s graduating senior class received appointments to the top United States service academies. The appointment of the five students marks the largest number of Briarcrest students appointed to the prestigious U.S. service academies in a single year.

In an effort to provide information on the Memphis City Schools and Shelby County Schools consolidation issue, the National Civil Rights Museum is holding a public information forum on Wednesday, March 2.

Participants include Memphis City Schools Board member Martavious Jones, Shelby County Schools Board Chair David Pickler and University of Memphis Law professor David Kiel.

Congratulations to our 7th grade girls and boys basketball teams for winning their tournament final games last Friday.

Our 7th grade girls defeated Briarcrest 33-31 and our 7th grade boys defeated MUS 35-29. Congratulations, Shelby 7/8 League Champions! We're so proud of you!

Bartlett screening acclaimed documentary “Including Samuel”

Shelby County Schools’ Department of Exceptional Children (is inviting educators and parents all across Memphis and Shelby County to attend a special screening of the highly acclaimed documentary “Including Samuel,” at Bartlett High School on Monday, Feb. 21. Filmmaker Dan Habib will lead a Q and A session with audience members after the screening.

“Including Samuel” has received great reviews from many major national media outlets, including NPR, Good Morning America, the Washington Post and the Boston Globe.

Pickler nominated for a top job with national group

Shelby County School Board Chairman David Pickler is a candidate for a top seat with the National School Boards Association.

Pickler has been nominated for the position of secretary-treasurer on the NSBA’s board of directors.
