Bartlett woman celebrates 102nd birthday

Mary “T.T.” Wade is celebrating her 102nd birthday this weekend.

The lifelong Bartlett resident says she still likes to do crossword puzzles and goes to church every Sunday.

She also says she loves to watch Dave Brown and Ron Childers every day on Action News 5.

Longstanding ministry comes to an end

Forty-one years of ministering to the physically and mentally handicapped has ended for Gary and Diane Lowery.

The Lowery’s unexpectedly started a church service at Arlington Developmental Center 41 years ago.

They were asked in 1969 to talk, pray and read bible scriptures by their former pastor to his handicapped daughter at ADC one Sunday.

That Sunday turned into every Sunday spanning over four decades. Along with Diane and Gary, the musician, William Carraway Jr. and his father William Carraway Sr. were instrumental in developing a church service for the handicapped.

Sharpton joins union to oppose consolidation

Rev. Al Sharpton will appear at a union rally Thursday and ask voters to reject the proposed consolidation of Memphis city and Shelby County governments.

“Next Tuesday, election day, there is a measure on the ballot that does not serve the needs of this community and threatens your right to have a say in your future,” said AFSCME Secretary-Treasurer Lee Saunders in a written statement.

Sharpton, union leaders and members of the local chapter of the National Action Network will meet at the AFSFCME headquarters, 485 Beale St., at 10:30 a.m.
