Memphis Bishop stunned by Papal Resignation

Memphis Bishop stunned by Papal Resignation

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Memphis celebrates twenty years of service as leader of his flock in the twenty one counties of West Tennessee in 2013.

The last thing Bishop J. Terry Steib expected in his twentieth year was the retirement of his boss at the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI.

"My initial reaction was really one of disbelief," Steib said. "I heard it on the radio and I said that must be some mistake here. Let me hear some more, you know?"

But it was no error. Benedict became the first Pope to announce his resignation in more than six centuries.

"I knew that he had talked about it and when we had done our Ad Limina in Rome, " the Memphis Bishop said.

Sheriff’s Deputy named 2013 Valor Award Winner

Shelby County residents have reason to be proud of all the members of the Sheriff’s Office, but one has been singled out for distinction in the performance of his duties.

The 100 Club of Memphis has named Sgt. Jonathan Page, a deputy of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, as the winner of the 2013 Valor Award.

Page was responding to a call to search for a juvenile suspect on October 15 of last year.  While in pursuit, the juvenile attempted to load a revolver with a round of ammunition, then pointed the weapon at his head in an attempt to take his life.

Page used his experience and training to take the juvenile to the ground.

During the skirmish, the juvenile again attempted to take his own life by putting the gun to his head.  Page put his finger inside the trigger guard, behind the trigger, preventing the suspect from firing the revolver.  He was then able to take the weapon away from the juvenile.
