SC Head Start Sponsors Free Health Fair

Shelby County Head Start is sponsoring a free Community Health Fair on Monday January 16, 9:00-1:00 pm, at the Hollywood Community Center located at 1560 North Hollywood.

Families are invited to meet representatives of several social service agencies which include the medical field, law enforcement agencies and the military.  Students from the Soulsville Charter School will provide entertainment.  Several area barbers will give free haircuts and free food will be provided by area vendors.

January Is National Radon Action Month

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has designated January as National Radon Action Month and encourages families to test their homes for Radon.  Radon is a radioactive gas and is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.  You can't see it, smell it or taste it and it can be found all over the U.S..  For more information on how to test your home for radon, visit http://www.epa.gov/

Eco Expo!

The hugely successful Eco Expo is back with even more exhibitors showing us how to treat our earth more gently with green products, materials, services, and organizations.

Exhibitors will be offering ideas and information, and some will be selling their products and services.

The Expo is Sunday February 5th, 2012 from 11am until 3pm at Temple Israel--1376 East Massey Road...Memphis, TN.

For kids and adults of all ages, there’s something for everyone!

Learn, eat, explore, or just visit with some really nice people.

Final Day of "Bartlett Cares" Food Drive Wednesday

As of last week, the city of Bartlett has collected over 2,444 lbs of food & $756 for the Mid-South Food Bank in it's annual "Bartlett Cares" Food Drive. That total amounts to 1,827 meals and does not included on-line donations. The final day for the food-drive donations is Wednesday, January 4th.  Aread residence can drop donations off at City Hall only, from 8am-5pm.

Electrolux Names Construction Contractor

Electrolux today named WG Yates & Sons Construction as its general contractor for the construction of its new North American Cooking Products manufacturing center in Memphis.  Yates will be responsible for the management of the $80 million construction project.

In addition, the company announced that more than 50 percent of the $80 million construction spend would go to Memphis-area firms, with a minimum of 15 percent going to minority and women-owned area businesses.  Electrolux originally committed to spend $30 million with local firms, and this represents a 50 percent increase in local spending.  The company has already spent $5 million with 10 other local firms.

"BARTLETT CARES" HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE TO BENEFIT THE MID-SOUTH FOOD BANK

 

 

The city of Bartlett is sponsoring a city-wide food drive for The Mid-South Food Bank until January 3, 2012. If every Bartlett citizen donated just one can of food that would be over 54,000 lbs and would provide over 43,000 meals.

"It's been on my heart for so long that so many are struggling day to day, I believe this Food Drive, to benefit the Mid-South Food Bank, is a positive way to help those in need and make a difference in Bartlett and the surrounding communities. This is a difficult time of year for many people but I know that the Bartlett community can come together and make a great impact when it's needed most. I know Bartlett Cares!" said Bartlett mayor, Keith McDonald

Donations can be made at all Bartlett Fire Stations, Bartlett City Hall & the Bartlett Library. Monetary donations can be made online at www.midsouthfoodbank.org or in the Mayor's office at City Hall.

2011 Singing Christmas Tree Broadcast

If you missed Bellevue Baptist Singing Christmas Tree this year, Action News 5 is giving you two chances to see it!  WMC-TV 5 will be broadcasting the yearly Christmas classic on Christmas Eve, Saturday December 24 at 1:00 p.m., and also on Christmas Day, Sunday December 25 at noon.  

This is a one-hour version of the Singing Christmas Tree that features many of the musical highlights of the program.
