Learning Social Commerce

The University of Memphis announced Tuesday, they will be adding a new minor to the degree program for the Department of Marketing & Supply Chain Management in the Fogelman College of Business & Economics. A social commerce minor will be available to students in Fall 2012.

The university hopes to focus the minor on creating an online presence and crafting marketing strategies based on social media and modern technology.

This minor will be available to all students, but it is specifically geared to business majors. Students within the Fogelman Business College will need only 12 additional credit hours to receive the minor, and students outside the business major will need 18 hours for the minor.

This additional minor will be especially helpful for non-traditional students who are unfamiliar with social media.

Invisible Children's #StopKony

Trending in Memphis this morning is a powerful anti-child abduction campaign by the non-profit organization, Invisible Children. A video published Monday, March 5, 2012 titled Kony2012 is causing a stir.       The 30 minute long documentary is a "film and campaign by Invisible Children that aims to make Joseph Kony famous, not to celebrate him, but to raise support for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice" says Invisible Children, Inc.     Some groups accuse the organization of over-simplifying the problem.

"Walking in Memphis" Book Discussed

Neon Spring Fling Zumba Master Class

Every year, people seem to forget about their New Year’s Resolutions for improving their health.

Now it's time to get your neon gear ready for a great spring event (13 and up) that is focused on fitness!

The Neon Spring Fling Zumba® Master Class will “re-awaken” the interest of Memphians (in all communities) and help them achieve their goals and improve their overall health.  The event will be held the Rumba Room, 303 South Main in Memphis.  Doors will open at 6pm. The event runs from 6:30-8pm.   

A number of health benefits will be gained from two hours of non-stop aerobic activity and dance.  The event will also serve as a cultural exchange for Memphis.  People from all across the Mid-South will meet under one roof to enjoy an internationally themed event.  Everyone is asked to bring their brightest, most neon colored gear.

It's Dr. Seuss' Birthday Celebration at the CMOM

Join the Children's Museum of Memphis, Friday, March 2, from 11am - 3pm to celebrate the birthday of the man behind everyone's favorite childhood books. Wear red and white, participate in a Dr. Seuss storybook character hunt and look for a special guest in a red and white hat to stop by at noon.

Bartlett Business Expo

75 businesses,  their products and services, will be on display at the  Bartlett Business Expo on March 8, starting at 9:00 A.M.  Admission is free and there will be door prizes and giveaways.  The expo will be held at the Bartlett Recreation Center, 7700 Flaherty Place.  Contact the Bartlett Area Chamber of Commerce for more information.

Public meeting on Lakeland schools and how to pay for them

The Board of Commissioners of Lakeland, Tennessee will hold a Public Meeting Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 5:30 P.M. to discuss the creation and funding of a municipal school district in the City of Lakeland and a special referendum regarding the municipal school district to be held on May 10, 2012.

The increase of the sales and use tax in City of Lakeland from 2.25% to 2.75% as well as a referendum regarding the increase of the sales and use tax and other revenue sources, including a property tax will be discussed.

The Public Meeting will be held at City Hall, 10001 U.S. Highway 70 in Lakeland.
