County offers free prescription drug discount card

Shelby County residents can take advantage of a new, free program that offers discounts on everything from prescriptions to dental visits.

The county has teamed up with Financial Marketing Concepts to offer the drug cards.

“Discounts on prescription drugs will help ease some of the financial burdens many of our families in Shelby County are facing,” said Shelby County Mayor Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

The cards are available online, government offices, libraries, local health departments and at participating pharmacies.

Every Shelby County resident, regardless of age or health, is eligible for the Coast2Coast Rx Card.

Flooding likely to increase number of mosquitoes

Flooding likely to increase number of mosquitoes

People spending time outside in Shelby County will likely be faced with some bothersome bugs thanks to the recent flooding.

The county’s health department is warning people that the large amount of standing water will increase the number of mosquitoes.

“We strongly recommend protective action be taken as families begin work to clean out and restore their homes in the days and weeks ahead,” said Dr. Daniel Sprenger, manager of the health department’s Vector Control Program. “It’s very important that mosquito repellents be used and proper clothing be worn to protect individual health.”

After all, mosquitoes aren’t just an annoyance. They also carry diseases like West Nile Virus.

Wine deliveries bill passes in Tennessee

A Tennessee bill that would allow wine to be shipped to every home in the state is now up to the Governor.

The bill allows direct wine shipments from retailers to consumers -- even in cities that currently only allow liquor-by-the-drink sales.

Governor Bill Haslam is expected to sign the bill.
