Mayor Luttrell continues family life series with Just Care Family Network

Shelby County Government continues to partner with faith-based organizations and other groups to host Mayor Mark Luttrell’s Family Life Series. Representatives from Shelby County Government and other agencies will speak at Keel Avenue Baptist Church during a five month series of presentations.

On May 16, the CDC issued its first comprehensive report on children's mental health describing federal activities that track children’s mental disorders in the United States.

Tonight’s series, led by Just Care Family Network Executive Director Dr. Altha Stewart, will aim at “Helping Children and Youth Affected by Crime and Violence” 

 “Just Care Family Network is honored to be a part of this series.

The City of Lakeland will host the 2nd Annual Outdoors Festival at International Harvester Park on May 4th, 2013 from 9 a.m.

Community Document Shred-It Day Scheduled

First Citizens National Bank in cooperation with the Bartlett Police Department is sponsoring a free on site document shred on Wednesday, April 17th, 2013 from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm.

Citizens are encouraged to bring their documents and other papers to be shredded to the First Citizens National Bank at 7580 Highway 70, which is located at the intersection of Highway 70 and Appling Road.

Any questions may be directed to the Bartlett Police Department at 901-385-5510 or First Citizens National Bank at 901-213-9900.

There is a strict 100 pound limit on materials to be shredded per person.

The event is designed for personal shredding and not for business documentation disposal.

"Funerals of the Titanic" Presentation

If you are fascinated by the stories of the Titanic, a presentation titled, "Funerals of the Titanic" will be at the Bartlett Senior Center, 5727 Woodlawn Street, April 15, beginning at 10 a.m.

The presentation is made up of interesting stories of the passengers of the Titanic.

Bartlett library to hold annual book sale

Bartlett library to hold annual book sale

Friends of the Bartlett Library will hold their Annual Book Sale April 19 to 21 at the BSMC Banquet Hall, adjacent to the library. 

Thousands of books for adults and children, will be on sale priced from 25 cents to $2.  

Admission is free, and the times are: Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Shelby County Health Department (SCHD), in collaboration with other local organizations, will encourage youth to take a stand against big tobacco companies and educate their peers about the importance of not smoking on Kick Butts Day, Wednesday, March 20.

Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism which empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against big tobacco companies. Health officials want to raise awareness of the tobacco problem, encourage youth to stay tobacco-free and urge strong action to protect kids from tobacco.

Representatives from the health department will be at the following locations on Wednesday, March 20, to distribute information and tips on smoking cessation:

1 p.m.

CERT Training to be offered at IH Clubhouse in Lakeland.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area.  It also trains them in basic disaster response skills; such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.

Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.

CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

The most recent CERT class concluded last November and had 14 graduates that included citizens from Bartlett, Eads, Memphis and Lakeland. 

There will be two classes starting in March at the IH Clubhouse in Lakeland.
