AmEx Members Project to help local charity

The American Express Members Project will give $5,000 to a local charity. It's up to you to vote and help decide which Mid-South charity will receive this funding.

The charities eligible are:

*The Blues Foundation

*American Red Cross, Mid-South Chapter

*National Civil Rights Museum

*Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County

*Mid-South Food Bank

*Youth Villages

The Members Project encourages people to volunteer time, donate, or just share information about their favorite charities.

The First Annual Family Day White Out Extravaganza

Looking for a fun family event without all the hassle? Well look no further!

Reunion Memphis and Aaron Jones Productions along with Building Blocks Mentoring Program presents the First Annual Family Day White Out Extravaganza.

This is a city-wide event where young people and their families can come out and enjoy a fun-filled day of activities, including a red-carpet VIP entrance, games, food, contests, face painting and a youth dance. There will also be a performances by Memphis’ own Lil’ P-Nut.

Donations needed for flood victims

The Mid-South Food Bank says it needs donations to help Mid-Southerners who have been forced from their homes by the recent flooding.

However, right now, the non-profit says it only needs food items that don’t need to be cooked:

  • Crackers with cheese or peanut butter
  • Protein bars
  • Granola bars
  • Tuna kits

The Food Bank is also asking for household supplies:

  • Cleaning supplies
  • Diapers
  • Wipes
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Toilet paper
  • Paper towels
  • Tissues

You can drop off your donations at the Mid-South Food Bank, 229 South Dudley St. or donate by visiting the group’s website and checking “disaster relief” in the dropdown box.

Bartlett Chamber holding annual picnic

The 6th Annual Industry Appreciation Picnic will be held April 29, by the Bartlett Area Chamber of Commerce.

The picnic will run from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., and has a free admission.

The Brother Industries Picnic Pavillion will be the location of this event, 7777 North Brother Blvd. in Bartlett. For more information contact Clay Banks at cbanks@bartlettchamber.org.

Doctors bike across country for Haiti

Doctors bike across country for Haiti

Three doctors bicycling across the country for Haiti relief will make a stop in the Mid-South.

Haiti is still recovering from an earthquake that struck over a year ago. On May 1, the Memphis Redbirds will have a “Bisiklet for Haiti” game to help the doctors reach their fundraising goal of $30,000. The trio will throw out the first pitch when the Redbirds take on the Round Rock Express at 1:35 p.m. at AutoZone Park. A portion of all ticket sales that day will go to Bisiklet for Haiti and Cloud Forest Medical Clinic in Seguin, Haiti.

Come on Shelby County, sign up and ride!  Have fun, get healthy and improve air quality by keeping your vehicle off the road on May 20.

The workplace that has the most people to register will win the first ever “Memphis Bike to Work Champion” trophy.

Online registration for Bike-to-Work Day 2011 is now open; spread the word!

Shelby County Health Department’s Pollution Control Section is providing great incentives for all Shelby County employee registrants. Print off your registration sheet and bring by our office at 814 Jefferson, 4th floor and get a bike bag, blinker and other great clean air incentives.
