Vietnam Wall replica coming to Mid-South

The smaller scale, traveling, Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall will be open for public viewing June 3 through June 5.

The round-the-clock memorial will be located at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens at 3700 North Germantown Parkway.

Opening ceremonies will be held at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday, with a candlelight ceremony on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

Come “Empower Yourself” at the 16th Annual Sisterhood Showcase, June 4th and 5th at the Memphis Cook Convention Center. The entire family can enjoy the stellar line-up of talent and hundreds of vendors with lifestyle enhancing products that focus on fashion, beauty, health, home, and more. The festivities will take place Saturday from 9:30 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Sunday, the doors will open at 9 a.m. for worship service.  The guest church this year is Mt. Moriah East Baptist Church with their award winning Mass Choir.

Annual Youth Fishing Rodeo

It’s time for the 11th annual Youth Fishing Rodeo at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park. The annual fishing rodeo begins June 10 and is hosted by Bloomfield Full Gospel Baptist Church and the Bloomfield Urban Ministries. The free family event is full of food, games, and prizes.

Youth Fishing and Volunteer Times:

Friday June 10th – 6pm – 7pm

Saturday June 11th – 6:45am -8a.m.

Saturday June 11th – 9:15 a.m.

Exhibition highlights local church's work

A group from Hope Presbyterian Church went to Kenya in February on a mission trip. An exhibit of photos from the trip, called "Hope in Kenya," will be shown at the church's gallery.

The event is May 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Disciple Gallery, located at 390 South Main in Memphis.

Prints and photo books will be for sale with all profits going to Global Missions (Hope Presbyterian Church).

Wei Chen will attempt to become the first Chinese citizen to fly round-the-world in a single engine airplane, and his plane will take off from Memphis!  

Not only that, but Wei and the county and city mayors are asking you to help name his plane!

Wei Around the World is holding a contest to name the plane that Wei will be flying, and would like to invite all of the Greater-Memphis area to join in this momentous occasion! The winner receives recognition on all websites and a special co-pilot stint for “Wei Around Memphis”! The contest will be judged by Mayor AC Wharton, Jr., Mayor of Memphis and Mayor Mark Luttrell, Mayor of Shelby County.

On May 22, 2011….a ten-week journey around the world in a single engine plane begins. Wei Chen, a private Chinese Citizen will be at the controls.

Annual Fishing Rodeo Set For Saturday, May 21

The Annual Lakeland Fishing Rodeo is scheduled for Saturday, May 21, 2011 at the IH Park located at 4523 Canada Road in Lakeland.

The event is for children aged 4-12 and trophy and prizes will be awarded in various categories.

Volunteers and contributions are needed to keep this event happening! Due to other events, volunteers and contributions are needed this year. Contact Theresa Meyer (867-2717, TMeyer@lakelandtn.org) for information on volunteering or contributing to this annual event!

Watch BTW graduation, help fund scholarships

Friends for a Better Tomorrow is hosting a celebration of President Obama's historic visit to Memphis and the accomplishments of Booker T. Washington High School's students - the National Race to the Top Commencement Challenge winners.

A simulcast of the graduation will be held in the Venetian Room of the historic Peabody Hotel from 11:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

A VIP cocktail party with featured speakers will follow the commencement exercise.
