Hope House will host its 3rd annual Theatre for Hope July 16 at Playhouse on the Square.

Theatre for Hope will feature a silent auction showcasing work by local artists.

The highlight is a special performance of Playhouse’s production of the musical “Footloose.”

Students learn arts from area pros

More young artists, musicians and thespians than ever are taking part in Shelby County Schools’ 2011 Summer Fine Arts Academy SFAA. The 4th annual academy is taking place June 6 – 10 at Bon Lin Middle School in Bartlett, with nearly 500 students in grades 6-10 attending unique and stimulating sessions from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. every day.

The theme for this year’s academy is “Exploring Films Through Music, Visual Art and Theatre.” Daily workshops focusing on the areas of visual arts, band/strings chorus and theatre will be led by local professional artists and musicians, as well as students and teachers from local colleges and universities.

The Second Quarter Art in City Hall Exhibit, featuring works of art by students from Arlington High School, is currently underway was Lakeland City Hall.

The show  includes a colorful variety of mediums selected from high school art classes.  Art lovers can enjoy the exhibit until June 30, 2011.  City Hall is located at 10001 Highway 70 in Lakeland.  Regular business hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:40 p.m., Monday thru Friday.

Come “Empower Yourself” at the 16th Annual Sisterhood Showcase, June 4th and 5th at the Memphis Cook Convention Center. The entire family can enjoy the stellar line-up of talent and hundreds of vendors with lifestyle enhancing products that focus on fashion, beauty, health, home, and more. The festivities will take place Saturday from 9:30 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Sunday, the doors will open at 9 a.m. for worship service.  The guest church this year is Mt. Moriah East Baptist Church with their award winning Mass Choir.

It’s time for the 11th annual Youth Fishing Rodeo at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park. The annual fishing rodeo begins June 10 and is hosted by Bloomfield Full Gospel Baptist Church and the Bloomfield Urban Ministries. The free family event is full of food, games, and prizes.

Youth Fishing and Volunteer Times:

Award winning actress to host Orpheum Awards

Award winning actress to host Orpheum Awards

Tony Award nominated actress and country artist Laura Bell Bundy will host the second annual High School Musical Theatre Awards at the Orpheum Theatre on May 26.

A native of Kentucky, Bundy originated the lead role of Elle Woods in the Broadway musical Legally Blonde, for which she received a Tony Award nomination. She also originated the role of Amber Von Tussle in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Hairspray and played Glinda in the smash hit Wicked.

Prior to that, she originated the role of Tina Denmark in the successful off-Broadway production Ruthless, The Musical!, for which she received the Outer-Critics Circle Award and Drama Desk nominations. Her debut country album Achin’ and Shakin’ was released in 2010 on Mercury Records - Nashville. Bundy can currently be seen in a recurring role on the CBS sitcom, How I Met Your Mother.
