Election Commission invites Shelby Co. voters to inspect machines

The Shelby County Election Commission will hold voting machine inspections prior to the Aug. 5 elections.

The touch screen units to be used for Early Voting will be ready for inspection on Thursday, July 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The touch screen units to be used for Election Day will be ready for inspection on Monday, July 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Anyone who wishes to inspect the machines should visit the Election Operations Center, located at 980 Nixon Drive in Memphis during the above times.

Sales Tax Holiday to provide savings for Tenn. shoppers

The fifth annual Tennessee Sales Tax Holiday will begin Friday, Aug. 6 and will continue through Sunday, Aug. 8. During this weekend, consumers can save almost 10 percent on tax-free clothing, school and art supplies and computer purchases.

Gov. Phil Bredesen said the holiday is intended to help families across the state.

"The holiday provides much needed savings for all Tennessee shoppers and prepares children for success by making sure they start the first day of school properly equipped with items they need," Bredesen said.

 The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation unveiled David Crockett State Park’s seven new, energy efficient Green Cabins on Monday June 6.  The Green Cabins offer new technologies addressing energy efficiency, pollution prevention, children’s health and stormwater management, in addition to easily transferable energy conservation practices.  Upon silver certification as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the new cabins will mark the first of their kind in a Tennessee State Park.

Crime Stoppers Crime of the Week

On Friday, June 18, at approximately 11:50 p.m., Old Allen Station officers responded to a shooting at 5178 Banbury and disovered Antonio Hawkins had been shot inside the residence.  Hawkins was transported to The MED where he was pronounced dead.

A witness advised two male suspects came into the victim's garage and shot him when he came to the door.  The suspects were then seen running from the scene.

EAST MEMPHIS (WMC-TV) - The Memphis-Shelby County Health Department has ordered a Mexican restaurant to shut down for 24 hours after its third failed inspection in less than a month.

Health Department spokesperson Lorrie Clark said La Mexicana Taqueria, 2535 Whitten Rd., has appealed its suspension notice and will remain open until the department schedules a hearing.
