Saint Francis Hospital-Memphis only hospital to receive top honors from national association

The American Heart Association's (AHA) Get With the GuidelinesSM (GWTG) initiative has recognized Saint Francis Hospital-Memphis with two Gold Awards for 2010. Saint Francis is the only Memphis area hospital to be so honored, and one of only four to be honored in the state of Tennessee.  These Gold Performance Achievement Awards recognize the hospital's success in meeting AHA guidelines for treating patients with Coronary Artery Disease and for Heart Failure.

The hospital was featured in the U.S. News & World Report "Best Hospitals" July issue and will have an ad listing in the December issue of the respected medical journal Circulation, among several other honors.

Saint Francis planning $34 million expansion

Expansions at St. Francis Hospital in Bartlett will add almost 100 new beds to the facility and double the number of patients it can handle in surgery and in the ICU.

The hospital broke ground on the $34 million, more than 83,000 square foot project Thursday morning.

“This facility expansion will allow us to add the space and medical technology needed to support the community for years to come,” said the hospital’s CEO Kem Mullins in a written statement.

The new building is expected to be finished by the second quarter of 2012.

“This project represents our continued commitment to promote the health and well-being of this community," said Mullins.

Saint Francis Hospital - Bartlett breaks ground on 96 bed expansion

Saint Francis Hospital-Bartlett looks to the future with a groundbreaking for the hospital’s facility expansion.   The $34 million dollar project will result in 96 additional hospital beds for Bartlett and the surrounding area.  

The expansion will allow Saint Francis Hospital-Bartlett to double their current total of ICU beds and surgical suites.  In addition, ancillary services such as pharmacy and laboratory will be relocated and expanded.  Finally, with the addition of more than 83,000 square feet, Saint Francis-Bartlett will have space available to expand service lines to serve the growing needs of the community.

Bolton 5K honors murdered teacher Ashley Scott

Ashley Scott was murdered on Thanksgiving Day 2006 by her husband, but the students and staff at Bolton High School haven’t forgotten her.

Jeffrey Scott was convicted of second degree murder and eventually sentenced to 25 years behind bars for beating his wife to death in their home.

The school will hold its annual 5K walk and run in Scott’s memory on Saturday, Oct. 9. The proceeds from the race will help other abused women. All the money raised from the event will go to the YWCA Abused Women’s Services and the Memphis/Shelby County Domestic Violence Council.

Symphony, churches bring Bach to Idlewild

Here’s some information on an upcoming concert at Idlewild Presbyterian Church:

The popular Bach at Idlewild concert series begins its fifth year at 4 p.m. Oct. 3. Core players of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra (MSO) join the choirs and soloists of Idlewild Presbyterian and Bartlett United Methodist Churches and musicians from throughout the community for a varied program of solo, chamber and sacred choral music. The new MSO music director Mei Ann Chen will supervise rehearsals and program, and her gifted new assistant conductor Stilian Kirov will be on the podium.

Firefighters suffer heat exhaustion battling flames

Two firefighters had to be treated for heat exhaustion after battling flames Wednesday morning at a home in the 8200 block of Craven Rd.

Adding to the danger, investigators say the fire started in the home’s garage where guns and ammunition were stored. Crews say the fire started just before 9 a.m. and eventually burned a car in the garage and did extensive damage to part of the home.

Commissioners planning consolidation meeting

A group of county commissioners want to hear what people in their district have to say about the proposed merger between the governments of Memphis and Shelby County.

Watt Bunker, Chris Thomas and Terry Roland will hold a town hall meeting in the Bartlett Municipal Center’s reception hall.

The meeting is scheduled to start ay 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23.

Shelby County’s voters will cast their ballots on consolidation during the November election.
