Help end the zombie apocalypse this Halloween

You can fight off zombies and not have to worry about getting eaten alive this Halloween at Range USA.

The shooting range is bringing back its zombie themed range for the second year. Zombie Night 2 starts Oct. 28 and runs through Oct. 30 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. every night.

Instructors dressed as members of the Range USA Zombie Annihilation Team will lead shooters through the course one at a time, blasting zombies with pistols, rifles, shotguns and fully automatic weapons as they go.

Safe driving program receives 4th national award

The “Alive at 25” defensive driving course taught by the University of Memphis has received a Trend Setter Award from the National Safety Council (NSC).

The award honors driver training centers that are continually striving to improve their programs in order to make highways and communities safer. It was presented to the U of M program at the NSC’s national convention in San Diego earlier in October.

This is the fourth year in a row that the U of M program has been recognized nationally.

Sharpton joins union to oppose consolidation

Rev. Al Sharpton will appear at a union rally Thursday and ask voters to reject the proposed consolidation of Memphis city and Shelby County governments.

“Next Tuesday, election day, there is a measure on the ballot that does not serve the needs of this community and threatens your right to have a say in your future,” said AFSCME Secretary-Treasurer Lee Saunders in a written statement.

Sharpton, union leaders and members of the local chapter of the National Action Network will meet at the AFSFCME headquarters, 485 Beale St., at 10:30 a.m.

High school seniors can win big with financial literacy essays

It’s time again for money-savvy high school seniors to put on their thinking caps. The Securities Division of Tennessee’s Department of Commerce and Insurance is seeking entries for its annual essay contest.

Tennessee 12th-graders who enter are to write a 1,500-word essay on the topic: “Discuss how social media has influenced you, if at all, in developing the goals and financial plans for your future, and how social media has contributed to your decisions for your financial future.”

There will be two winners selected from the state’s eastern, middle and western regions. First-place winners will receive a $2,000 savings bond; second-place winners will be awarded a $1,000 savings bond.

New CERT instructors "Making A Difference" in Shelby County

Dressed out in bright green hardhats, green reflective vests, goggles, and gloves, 25 Shelby County citizens spent the three-day "Make A Difference" weekend learning how to teach others how to survive disasters.

These students had previously graduated from the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training and were now attending the "train the trainer" course to become certified CERT instructors themselves.

CERT teaches citizens about the potential hazards and threats that are likely to occur in this region and trains them how to survive and be self-sufficient until professional rescuers arrive on the scene.

Seattle first to create Opt-Out Registry for phone books

Seattle became the first city in the nation to create a registry that allows its residents and business to stop delivery of unwanted yellow pages phone books.

The new law passed by in an 8-1 vote by Seattle City Council on Monday creates an Opt-Out Registry that residents and businesses can access on the web, by phone or by mail and requires yellow pages publishers to pay the costs of operating the registry.

The legislation also sets out penalties for yellow pages publishers who continue to deliver books when requested not to. And it requires yellow pages publishers to begin paying for recycling of unwanted and outdated yellow pages directories beginning next year.
