State helping smokers kick habit

Tennessee smokers are urged to join the Great American Smokeout on Nov. 18, an opportunity to join millions of others in saying “no thanks” to tobacco for 24 hours.

The Tennessee Department of Health encourages tobacco users to call the Tennessee Tobacco QuitLine at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) to set a plan for how to quit.

“It’s true that quitting tobacco use is not an easy feat, but the Great American Smokeout provides individuals the needed opportunity to get started,” said Health Commissioner Susan R. Cooper.

Bolton offering a glimpse of International Baccalaureate program

Two Shelby County high schools will host an informational meeting for parents and students who are interested in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program.

The meeting will allow visitors to receive an overview of the IB Program. Visitors will also have an opportunity to meet faculty members who will teach IB subjects and ask questions about admission, acceptance and participation in the comprehensive academic program. Parents of current middle school students are especially encouraged to attend one of the following sessions:

Mid-South hospital allows paid reservations in ER

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Mid-South hospital is using a new program to limit the amount of time patients spend in its emergency room.  St. Francis Hospital recently launched a new program that lets patients make reservations for emergency room visits at its Memphis and Bartlett hospitals.

"Nobody likes to wait, especially not in a waiting room," said Roamy Kilmer, a nurse manager at the hospital.

The InQuickER reservation system allows patients to make emergency department appointments online, rather than just showing up and waiting.

Bartlett Elementary honoring oldest living Marine

Bartlett Elementary School will honor the man believed to be the oldest living Marine veteran living in the U.S. during its Veterans Day program on Friday.

The program will be held from 8:45 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. and include a selection of patriotic songs from the Bartlett High School Band.

Students welcome heroes to Appling Middle

Appling Middle will host its “Heroes for Heroes” luncheon on Wednesday, Nov. 10.

The school is expecting 30 veterans to join students at lunch time. Each veteran will be treated to a "hero" sandwich. Their pictures will also be added to a Hero Wall of Fame on the cafeteria wall with pictures of the heroes as well.

5K helps P.E., arts in county schools

The Shelby County Schools Education Foundation is holding its 10th annual Race for Education later this month in Bartlett.

“The Race for Education began in 2001 as the brainchild of several district parents who were alarmed by drastic cuts in funding for Shelby County Schools' programs in art, music and physical education,” said a representative in a written statement.” Thus, proceeds from the race are used to provide grants for such programs in each of the district's schools.”

Bartlett woman charged with hitting state trooper

A Bartlett woman has been charged with running over a Tennessee Highway Patrol officer while he was directing traffic last week.

Alexis Schwill is facing a long list of charges including: aggravated assault, resisting arrest and refusing to help the injured trooper.

Investigators say the trooper was directing traffic after a crash at Jetway Drive and Highway 70 on the night of Nov. 2 when he was hit.

The trooper suffered broken ribs and a broken left arm. His injuries required surgery, but doctors say they were not life threatening.
