Teacher evaluation system still under development

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A new teacher evaluation system is set to start in Tennessee in six months, but parts of the system haven't been written and principals haven't been trained.

The evaluation system is part of an education reform initiative that helped Tennessee secure $500 million in federal Race to the Top grant money.

Teachers and principals will now be partially judged based on student achievement and 49 schools across the state are testing parts of the new system. Principals will begin training in June.

Some specifics still haven't been decided, but acting Education Commissioner Patrick Smith told The Tennessean he hopes educators will be patient as the program rolls out.
