"Memphis" musical hits Memphis screens

Memphis, the Tony Award winning broadway musical, opens Thursday, April 28 in local theaters.

The musical was filmed to highlight the show's upcoming national tour, which will debut at the Orpheum in Memphis October 14.

For those of you wanting to celebrate the spirit of Memphis music this weekend, all you have to do is go to the movies.

Conference held for Alzheimer's caregivers

The Alzheimer’s Association of the Mid-South is proud to present the 2011 Caregiver’s Conference to be held on Thursday, May 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Agricenter International  at 7777 Walnut Grove.

This day long conference, made possible from generous funding from the Aging Commission of the Mid-South, is created specifically for those who are responsible for caring for a compromised family loved one who is suffering from dementia. The theme of this year’s conference is "Survivor… Prevail, Persist and Persevere."

Seminars include “To Drive Or Not To Drive," "Legal Issues”, “Enriching Your Life Through Their Memories,” “Drumming for Caregiver Stress Relief” and more. A vendor fair packed with educational information as well as giveaways is sure to please conference participants.

A free lunch will be offered and participants will also enjoy a non alcohol tropical drink from the Tiki Bar. 

The entire day is free including free parking.

Exhibit honoring Vietnam veterans headed to Bartlett

This summer, a traveling version of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial will spend three days in Bartlett.

“Its black, reflective surface is inscribed with the names of more than 58,000 servicemen and women who died or are missing in Vietnam,” said an organizer. “Paper and pencils will be provided so visitors can make rubbings of names etched on the wall.”

The three-quarter scale version of the memorial, called the Dignity Wall, will be at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens from June 3 through June 5.

Government officials are warning that floodwaters could top the levees throughout the Mid-South in the coming days.

“At 34 feet, water begins to top riverbanks,” said a Shelby County Office of Preparedness spokesman in a written statement. “Weather service forecasters predict a flood stage of possibly 45 feet which could threaten levees.”

A roundtrip ticket on the transportation authority’s Grizzlies shuttles will cost $5. While it might be easy to get to FedEx Forum, it won’t be easy to get inside the arena if you don’t already have a ticket.

April storms cause more than $6 million damage

Just before tornado sirens went off across Shelby County Monday afternoon, government officials announced that storms during April will cost taxpayers more than $6 million.

The millions of dollars will only pay for repairs to utilities and debris removal, the estimate doesn’t include the cost of damage done to personal property during the storms on April 4 and April 19.
