Award winning actress to host Orpheum Awards

Tony Award nominated actress and country artist Laura Bell Bundy will host the second annual High School Musical Theatre Awards at the Orpheum Theatre on May 26.

A native of Kentucky, Bundy originated the lead role of Elle Woods in the Broadway musical Legally Blonde, for which she received a Tony Award nomination. She also originated the role of Amber Von Tussle in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Hairspray and played Glinda in the smash hit Wicked.

Prior to that, she originated the role of Tina Denmark in the successful off-Broadway production Ruthless, The Musical!, for which she received the Outer-Critics Circle Award and Drama Desk nominations. Her debut country album Achin’ and Shakin’ was released in 2010 on Mercury Records - Nashville. Bundy can currently be seen in a recurring role on the CBS sitcom, How I Met Your Mother.

Parents know that keeping their kids entertained while school is out for the summer can be challenging, and expensive.

But the Pink Palace Family of Museums is offering a free membership this month.

The membership allows you to take up to 10 related children to either the Pink Palace or the Lichterman Nature Center.

Friends of the Bartlett Library Program will discuss the new book "Elvis Presley's Memphis" on June 6, at 6:30, at the Bartlett Public Library.

The library is located at 5884 Stage Rd., and the event is free.

Exhibition highlights local church's work

A group from Hope Presbyterian Church went to Kenya in February on a mission trip. An exhibit of photos from the trip, called "Hope in Kenya," will be shown at the church's gallery.

The event is May 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Disciple Gallery, located at 390 South Main in Memphis.

Prints and photo books will be for sale with all profits going to Global Missions (Hope Presbyterian Church).

Wei Chen will attempt to become the first Chinese citizen to fly round-the-world in a single engine airplane, and his plane will take off from Memphis!  

Not only that, but Wei and the county and city mayors are asking you to help name his plane!

Wei Around the World is holding a contest to name the plane that Wei will be flying, and would like to invite all of the Greater-Memphis area to join in this momentous occasion! The winner receives recognition on all websites and a special co-pilot stint for “Wei Around Memphis”! The contest will be judged by Mayor AC Wharton, Jr., Mayor of Memphis and Mayor Mark Luttrell, Mayor of Shelby County.

On May 22, 2011….a ten-week journey around the world in a single engine plane begins. Wei Chen, a private Chinese Citizen will be at the controls.

Bartlett Parks Dept. holds golf tournament

The Bartlett Parks and Recreation Department will host its 13th Annual Golf Tournament. The tournament will be held on Thursday, May 19, at Quailridge Golf Course.

It will be a four-person scramble with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The entry fee is $90 per person, which includes green fees, cart, range balls, beverages and lunch.

The awards will include three flights and three places, longest drive, closest to the pin, putting contest and hole-in-one.

Annual Fishing Rodeo Set For Saturday, May 21

The Annual Lakeland Fishing Rodeo is scheduled for Saturday, May 21, 2011 at the IH Park located at 4523 Canada Road in Lakeland.

The event is for children aged 4-12 and trophy and prizes will be awarded in various categories.
